Education in India

Education plays a very important role in the Indian economy. It is mainly run by the public sector but is controlled and funded by the state, federal and the local level. The Nalanda University was the oldest university system of education in this world. After the British establishment the western education came into being.

Government and education

Education falls under the control of the Union Government and the state with certain responsibilities that lie with the Union and the states and has autonomy for others. The Indian constitution states in its articles that the provision for education is a fundamental right. The government has made primary education mandatory for all children of India by providing free education up to the primary level and disbursing scholarships for deserving children to pursue higher studies.
The rise of the improved education system is often quoted as the main contributing agents to the growth and rise of economy in India. In-spite of the growth in investment for educational purposes 35 percent of the population is still illiterate.

Primary education

Elementary education is given emphasis up to the age of fourteen years. To help children get this basic education the government has banned child labor. Owing to the economic disparity and social conditions it is difficult to enforce both the ban on child labor and also free education.

Private education

The government is currently the major provider of education with 80 percent of the school run by them. Private schools do not offer education to the poor as the fees are very high. The student teacher ratios are higher in the private schools. They not only cover their curriculum but also provide extra-curricular activities like general knowledge, science fairs, music, sports and drama.

Homeschooling

The HRD Minister Kapil Sibal had mentioned that if anyone wishes to not send his child to school the government will not interfere. The parents can teach their child at home if they wish so. Homeschooling is legal also.

Secondary Education

This covers children from 14 to 18. A feature of the secondary school education in India emphasis on profession based vocational training to help students get skills of his choice.

Women's education

The literacy rate of women is lesser when compared to men. Many of the girl children are either not sent to school or they get enrolled and soon drop out. By 2001 the rate has increased by 50 percent. Lately the government of India has launched the Saakshar Bharat Mission for Female literacy and this mission aims to bring down the female illiteracy rate by half of what it currently stands.
