Arts and Entertainment in India
When you talk about arts it includes architecture, paintings, music, dance, languages, cinema and also literature. Earlier the art forms were derived Vedic influences. After the rise of Jainism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikhism art forms started flourishing under the patronage of emperors and also kings. As Islam spawned a new era of Indian architecture and art, the English brought along with them the Roman and Gothic influences and made a fusion of the Indian style.

Music
Indian music comprise of different kinds of music like classical music, pop, folk etc. Indian classical music tradition includes Hindustani and Carnatic music. It is a source of religious inspiration, entertainment and also a cultural expression. India has more than a dozen ethnic groups who speak their own language and dialects. Together with the sub-continental forms there are other famous influences from Arab, Persia and Britain. Indian film music and the bhangra has become world renowned.
American soul, hip hop and rock have also made a large impact. Other popular music forms are dadra, bhajan, dhrupad, qawwali, ghazal, thumri, shabad, kirtan and gurbani. In early days Indian cinemas were filmed with Indian classical and folk inspiration and just a little bit of western element but over the years the western elements have increased drastically but without totally destroying the Indian flavor. Most of the Indian movies feature dance numbers and songs. Even before the movie is released the movie soundtracks are out on Cd's and tapes.

Dance
Classical dance is performed in different styles. The Natya Shasta which is the most important ancient treatise on classical Indian dance is also referred to the fifty Veda in reference to the foundation of Hindu religion and philosophy which gave rise to the south Indian musical tradition of Carnatic music. The current forms include Odissi, Bharatanatyam, Manipuri, Mohiniaattam, Kathak, Sattriya, Kathakali and Kuchipudi.

Painting
Indian paintings in earlier times meant rock paintings of pre-historic times, the petroglyphs like those that are found in places like the Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka. The carved pillars of Ellora are a fine example of Indian paintings and colors out of which most of the shades are red and orange and were derived from minerals.
After that frescoes of Ajanta and Ellora caves came into the picture. Indian Buddhist literature has texts of the palaces of kings and aristocrats which were embellished with paintings. However Indian art was given new life during the British era when the new government needed painters to document Indian life and times.
