Health Care in India

Health Care in India is a prolonged process of development which is still undergoing development. However this situation has increased tremendously since the 1950s. Population growth and lack of licensed and genuine medical practitioners this has fallen greatly.

Primary health system

The primary health centers are the key factors of health care in rural areas. India had 22,400 primary health centers, 11,200 hospitals and 27,400 dispensaries in 1991. These health centers depend on paramedics to cater to their needs. The chief drawback of the growth of primary health centers is the predominance of private clinics and reluctant staff who are not willing to serve in rural areas.

The governments role

The government had taken much initiatives to develop health care in India and in 1991 it recorded a steady rise of 8, 11,000 hospitals throughout the country with comfortable beds and good treatment. Uttar Pradesh which is the most popular state had around 735 hospitals in 1990 and in 1991 Kerala had 2053 hospitals with a population of 29 million.

Further development plans

The majority of hospitals are managed by the Government while a few by charitable trusts and the rest by the private sector. Important medical aid and equipments reach urban centers initially making the health care in India a matter of great concern. In the 1990s cancer diagnostic institutes were established in major medical colleges and most of the private hospitals were not equipped with sophisticated medical equipment and facilities.

Private sector and health care

With the increase of medical colleges the number of registered nurses and medical practitioners has also increased incredibly. The middle class and the private medical sectors have seen the need for starting up hospitals and health care units for gain profits. Traditional medical practitioners today practice ayurvedic treatments that deal with patients using natural herbs as medicines.

Health insurance

With rising prices in the medical fields the common man can no longer pay huge medical bills and hence the need to introduce medical insurance has given rise to many government insurance companies like Life Insurance Company in India and General Insurance Company in India.

The LIC of India offer Asha Deep Plan that caters to the medical requirements of cancer, heart and kidney patients. Other policies like Med claim, Jeevan Asha, Personal Accident Policy, New India Assurance Bhavishya Arogya policy and many such policies have been introduced for the assistance of the patients in India. Besides the government aided insurance companies a wide selection of private insurance institutions are doing a very good job to help people pay their medical bills and undergo expensive treatment.
